What we pack for a UK family day out (and what we stopped bringing)

We used to leave the house looking like we were emigrating. After one too many trips carrying unused kit, we trimmed the bag to what UK weather and primary-age kids actually need.

The overpacked phase

We brought a change of clothes for everyone, three snack types, and toys nobody touched. The bag weighed more than the toddler. Now we pack for the plan, not every disaster. Free museum morning? Lightweight bag. All-day park? More snacks, one layer extra.

What stays in the bag

Water bottles — refilled at home. One fruit snack and one savoury — not a picnic unless we planned one. Wet wipes and a small first-aid pouch. Waterproof layer even in summer — UK weather turns fast. Car journey or waiting game printables in a folder. Phone charger and bank card — obvious, but easy to forget when rushing.

What we stopped bringing

Bulky scooters on tube days. Full toy boxes — one small notebook or spotting sheet is enough. Expensive shop snacks we could buy locally if needed. Multiple outfit changes unless potty training or messy play is guaranteed.
