About this activity

KS2 Mystery Bag Challenge hides household objects in an opaque bag. Children describe texture, weight, and temperature before guessing. Builds scientific vocabulary and patience — excellent after-school brain stretch, rainy weekend filler, and calm alternative to screens during summer heat.

Materials needed

  • Opaque bag or pillowcase
  • 5–8 safe household objects
  • Paper for guesses

Preparation time

5 minutes

How to play

  1. 1Secretly place five safe objects in an opaque bag (spoon, pine cone, sponge, key, cotton wool).
  2. 2Players take turns reaching in without looking and describing three properties aloud.
  3. 3Write a guess on paper before revealing; score one point for a correct first guess.
  4. 4Swap roles so each child becomes the mystery-bag setter once.
  5. 5Bonus round: invent a fairytale that includes every object in the bag.
